Faculty of Animal Science Unhas Cares for the Luwu Flood Disaster

Concerned about the natural disasters that occurred in South Sulawesi, the Faculty of Animal Science together with the Hasanuddin University Emergency Response Team contributed by providing logistical assistance to victims of natural disasters (Monday, 6 May 2024). The Faculty of Animal Science provided food assistance in the form of meatballs produced by the Unhas Maiwa Breeding Center (MBC, Faculty of Animal Science business unit). The Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science Unhas, Dr. Syahdar Baba, S.Pt., M.Si stated that for the first stage, the logistical assistance was in the form of 100 packs of meatballs for disaster victims in Luwu Regency, and he would continue to coordinate with the Unhas team in the field for other forms of assistance. Syahdar further hopes that this ready-to-eat food assistance can help deal with disaster victims in Luwu. Hasanuddin University, through the Academic and Student Affairs Division, dispatched an Emergency Response Team to Luwu Regency consisting of 16 people, on Monday 6 May 2024 at 07.00 a.m. local time. The team led by the Head of the Unhas Center for Disaster Studies was released directly by the Rector of Unhas, Prof Dr Ir Jamaluddin Jompa MSc in the courtyard of the Rectorate Building. On this occasion, Prof. JJ said that the Unhas Emergency Response Team which will be on duty until May 11 is a form of Unhas’ concern for the natural disasters that occurred in South Sulawesi.

Lecturer from the Faculty of Animal Science Provides Training on the Diversification of Processed Eggs to the Community in Sinjai Regency

Some of the faculty members from the Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University carry out training on the manufacture of processed egg products (Telur Pindang) for the women farmer group “Tani Putta” at the Lamattiriattang Village, Bulu Poddo District, Sinjai Regency (January 7th, 2024). The training was attended by members of the women’s farmer group. The service team members from the university were Dr. Muhammad Hatta S.Pt., M.Si, Dr. Hajrawati, S.Pt., M.Si Endah Murpiningrum, S.Pt., MP dan Ilham Syarif, S.Pt., M.Si. During the training, Telur Pindang was explained as one of the processed eggs in the herb solution for several hours to prolong egg quality during storage and provide the flavor for the egg. The material used during processing included the guava leaves, onion, and salt. All ingredients were immersed in the water and boiled for 30 min. The final result of this product was characterized by a dark brownish color of the eggshell.

The Lecturer from the Animal Production Department Helps the Community in Takalar Regency to Alleviate Nutritional Deficiency and Environmental Issues

A total of 20 lecturers from the Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University took action in the form of community services to encourage the community, the smallholder farmer in particular, to improve awareness toward the nutritional deficiency and the environment. The particular activity was carried out in the area of a smallholder farmer “Manongkoki II” located in Manongkoki Village, North Polongbangkeng District, Takalar Regency (Saturday 14 October 2023). The material presented during the activity included the management system of raising the local chicken by Dr Wempie Pakiding; the application of eco-enzymes made from household waste in the animal feed by drh. Farida Nur Yuliati; and the demonstration of diversification the chicken meat product by Dr Hajrawati. The PIC of the activity as well as the Head of the Animal Production Department, Prof M Irfan Said, IPM, ASEAN Eng., hopes that through the extension services, the farmer and other community members could understand better and be able to apply the discussion material in their daily lives. He also said that through this collaboration, the academic members from the university could optimize their role in improving the local tropical animal development on a smallholder scale, fulfilling the community members’ nutrition and enhancing the community’s awareness of their surroundings.
