Around the 1960s, several community leaders initiated the establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. On October 10, 1963, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science was established and inaugurated as the Faculty of Animal Science of Hasanuddin University on May 1, 1964, based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science number 37/1964 dated May 4, 1964. In 1977, adjustments were made to government policy so that the Faculty of Animal Science of Hasanuddin University was integrated into the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. In 1982, the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences was again expanded into the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Animal Science based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture number 0563/0/1982. The Faculty of Animal Science (Fapet) Unhas which was inaugurated on May 1, 1964, has played a role in producing animal husbandry graduates who have played a role in the development of the animal husbandry sub-sector in eastern Indonesia, especially South Sulawesi. To meet the needs of graduates of the Master level in Animal Science, on December 7, 2009, the Master of Animal Science and Technology Study Program was opened based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education Number 2332/D/T/2009 concerning the Permit to Organize the Master of Animal Science and Technology Study Program (Prodi S2) at Hasanuddin University in Makassar and began accepting students since the early semester of 2010. Furthermore, based on the 2016-2020 Faculty of Animal Science Strategic Plan and Hasanuddin University Rector Regulation Number 2785/UN.1/KEP/2018 concerning the Implementation of the Hasanuddin University Doctoral Program, a proposal was prepared to establish a Doctoral study program at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Hasanuddin University.

Based on the Letter of Application from the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Hasanuddin University (Prof. Dr. Ir. Sudirman Baco, M.Sc.) number 1820/UN4.12/UM.12/2017, dated May 4, 2017 regarding the Addition of the Doctoral Study Program in Animal Science, a Senate Meeting of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Hasanuddin University was held on May 9, 2017. The consideration meeting of the Senate of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Hasanuddin University approved and issued a recommendation letter Number 2126/UN4.12.5/IT.05/2017 dated June 2, 2017 signed by the Chairperson of the Senate of the Faculty of Animal Science (Prof. Dr. Ir. Lellah Rahim, M.Sc.) regarding the proposal for the establishment of a Doctoral study program in Animal Science. The recommendation letter was addressed to the Rector of Hasanuddin University (Prof. Dr. Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu, MA.). The Plenary Meeting of the Board of Majelis Wali Amanat (MWA) of Hasanuddin University on March 20, 2018 approved the opening of the Doctoral Study Program in Animal Science at Hasanuddin University based on the Decree number 002/UN4.0/KEP/2018 dated March 21, 2018 signed by the Chairman of the Board of MWA Prof. Dr. Basri Hasanuddin, MA. The Doctoral Study Program in Animal Science, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Hasanuddin University, began accepting students since the first semester of the 2018/2019 academic year. The Doctoral Study Program in Animal Science has been accredited “Baik Sekali” by BAN PT No. 4654/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-PKP/D/VIII/2020, dated August 18, 2020 and the accreditation period is until August 18, 2025.

In fact, the Doctoral Study Program in Animal Science is a development of concentration in the Agricultural Sciences Study Program managed by the Unhas Postgraduate Program (multidisciplinary study program), which has produced several Doctoral graduates in the field of animal science. The curriculum of the Doctoral Study Program in Animal Science is designed to produce graduate profiles as academics or teachers, researchers, and experts in the field of animal husbandry, who will fill the need for experts in the world of education, business/industry, partners, and alliances and the community.
