Forage Crops and Pasture Laboratory

The Forage and Pasture Crops Laboratory is a laboratory that supports the implementation of student practicum activities in the Forage Crops Science and Pasture Management courses and is used by lecturers and undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students for research activities. This laboratory is also used in UNHAS internal and external collaborative research. Moreover, this laboratory has a grass and legume collection area with the number of plant species continuing to increase along with/exchanging information on collections with other institutions.

PRACTICUM ACTIVITIES


BACKGROUND

Practical activities are an essential component of the learning process, particularly in applied sciences such as animal science, veterinary medicine, and food science. Practicum sessions provide students with the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom to real-world conditions, both in laboratory and field settings. In practice, these activities involve potential risks related to occupational safety, the use of equipment and materials, as well as student discipline and conduct. Moreover, the success of practicum activities is highly dependent on students’ preparedness, adherence to procedures, and effective coordination among students, teaching assistants, and lecturers.
Therefore, a clear and structured Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is required as a guideline for the implementation of practicum activities. This SOP aims to ensure safety and security during practicum activities; Improve student discipline and responsibility; Maintain order and smooth execution of practicum sessions. Ensure the quality of learning outcomes and practicum results with the implementation of this SOP, all parties involved are expected to carry out practicum activities effectively, efficiently, and in accordance with established standards.

OBJECTIVE

This SOP is established to regulate order and ensure the smooth implementation of practicum activities in both laboratory and field settings, while also ensuring student safety, discipline, and the quality of learning.

SCOPE

This SOP applies to all students participating in practicum activities and laboratory assistant in laboratory and field environments.

GENERAL PROVISIONS

  1. All students are required to comply with all regulations stated in this SOP.
  2. Violations of this SOP will be subject to sanctions in accordance with applicable regulations.

SOP IN THE LABORATORY

A. Student Regulations
1. Students must arrive 15 minutes before the practicum begins and sign the attendance list.
2. Students who do not wear a laboratory coat are not permitted to participate in the practicum.
3. Students must wear:
– Closed-toe shoes
– Appropriate practicum attire
4. Students must bring the practicum manual/book.
5. Students must pay close attention to instructions delivered by the teaching assistants.
6. Any activities that may disrupt the practicum (e.g., talking loudly, eating, drinking, etc.) are strictly prohibited.
7. Students who wish to leave the room must obtain permission from the assistant.
8. Cheating during pre-tests and post-tests is strictly prohibited.
9. Students must maintain cleanliness and order in the laboratory after the practicum.
10. Students who are unable to attend must provide:
– An official permission letter, or
– A medical certificate (in case of illness) to the lecturer or assigned assistant.

SOP IN THE FIELD

A. Student Regulations
1. Students must arrive 15 minutes before the activity begins and are not allowed to leave before completion without permission.
2. Students must wear:
– Field/practicum attire
– Boots or other required field equipment
3. Students must conduct the practicum in accordance with:
– The practicum manual
– Instructions from assistants and lecturers
4. Students are required to prepare and submit practicum reports on time.
5. Students who are unable to attend must provide:
– An official permission letter, or
– A medical certificate (in case of illness) to the lecturer and assigned assistant.
