Faculty of Animal Science Unhas Cares for the Luwu Flood Disaster
Concerned about the natural disasters that occurred in South Sulawesi, the Faculty of Animal Science together with the Hasanuddin University Emergency Response Team contributed by providing logistical assistance to victims of natural disasters (Monday, 6 May 2024). The Faculty of Animal Science provided food assistance in the form of meatballs produced by the Unhas Maiwa Breeding Center (MBC, Faculty of Animal Science business unit). The Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science Unhas, Dr. Syahdar Baba, S.Pt., M.Si stated that for the first stage, the logistical assistance was in the form of 100 packs of meatballs for disaster victims in Luwu Regency, and he would continue to coordinate with the Unhas team in the field for other forms of assistance. Syahdar further hopes that this ready-to-eat food assistance can help deal with disaster victims in Luwu. Hasanuddin University, through the Academic and Student Affairs Division, dispatched an Emergency Response Team to Luwu Regency consisting of 16 people, on Monday 6 May 2024 at 07.00 a.m. local time. The team led by the Head of the Unhas Center for Disaster Studies was released directly by the Rector of Unhas, Prof Dr Ir Jamaluddin Jompa MSc in the courtyard of the Rectorate Building. On this occasion, Prof. JJ said that the Unhas Emergency Response Team which will be on duty until May 11 is a form of Unhas’ concern for the natural disasters that occurred in South Sulawesi.
Study Program in Master of Animal Science and Technology Organize the FGD on Curriculum Alignment
Master’s Study Program (S2) in Animal Science and Technology (S2 ITP), Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University (Unhas) held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Curriculum Alignment on Tuesday, March 26 2024 in the Hall of the Faculty of Animal Science. This activity aims to assist in aligning the Master of Animal Science and Technology curriculum with industry needs and the latest scientific developments. This activity presented speakers and stakeholders who are ITP Masters alumni users. One of the speakers, Rini Rachmawaty, S.Kep., Ns., MN, Ph.D., emphasized the importance of a curriculum that is adaptive and relevant to industry needs. After the presentation of the material, it was continued with an FGD which was attended by 60 participants, consisting of lecturers from the Master of Animal Science and Technology Study Program, livestock industry practitioners, and alumni.
Kobe University Professor Gives Public Lecture on Animal Genetic Diversity to the Students of Animal Science Faculty of Universitas Hasanuddin
The Faculty of Animal Science at Hasanuddin University held a guest lecture delivered by Professor Hideyuki Mannen from Kobe University, Japan. The lecture focused on livestock genetic diversity. The event took place in LT 7, Hasanuddin University, on Friday, March 8, 2024. The guest lecture was attended by faculty members and students from the Faculty of Animal Science, including those from the 2021, 2022, and 2023 cohorts. There was great enthusiasm among the students who were eager to learn about the spread of genetic diversity. Prof. Hideyuki Mannen presented the results of his research, which he has been conducting for over 20 years and is ongoing to this day. His presentation was accompanied by Prof. Rr. Sri Rachma Aprilita Bugiwati, Ph.D., a lecturer from the Laboratory of Genetics and Animal Breeding at the Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University. The topics covered provided participants with an understanding of how DNA information reveals the origins and migration of livestock, genetic diversity to aid in genetic conservation, differences in lineages to better identify animals, and assist in planning breeding programs for the future. Undoubtedly, this material is crucial for students to grasp and for the future development of Animal Science. In addition, Prof. Hideyuki Mannen also visited Indonesia for the purpose of collecting research samples related to the topic of his guest lecture. The sample collection took place in Gorontalo Province. This research is a collaborative effort between iCORE and a team of researchers from the Laboratory of Genetics and Animal Breeding, Faculty of Animal Science, Unhas. The activities involved the collection of blood samples and measurements of body dimensions of male Kacang goats, conducted in collaboration with the team from Gorontalo State University.
Faculty of Animal Science Unhas Participated in the Kick-Off Meeting of the ELEGTEC Erasmus+ Program in Türkiye
The Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) together with the CBHE Erasmus+ consortium held a kick-off meeting for the ELEGTEC Erasmus+ 2024-2026 program in Izmir, Turkey on March 7-8, 2024. The ELEGTEC program aims to increase the capacity of the small leather tanning industry in Indonesia through training programs and increasing the mobility of Indonesian students. This program is a collaboration between 10 institutions, namely EGE University (Turkey), UNIPI (Italy), NTUA (Greece), CGS (Greece), Crithidev (Greece), UGM (Indonesia), Unhas (Indonesia), Unram (Indonesia), Indonesian Tannery Association (APKI), and the Indonesian Ministry of Industry. This kick-off meeting activity was attended by 20 participants. At this meeting, the participants discussed 6 work packages (WP) that would be implemented over the next 3 years. Unhas acts as a leader in WP-5 which focuses on developing training modules and curricula. Prof. Mehmet Mete Mutlu from Ege University, as the coordinator of the ELEGTEC program, said that this program is expected to increase the capacity of small leather tanning industries in Indonesia to implement environmentally friendly technology. The ELEGTEC program is expected to provide benefits to entrepreneurs and staff and improve product quality and competitiveness of the leather tanning industry in Indonesia. Moreover, this program also could increase international cooperation in the fields of education and research.
Researchers from the Faculty of Animal Science Initiated the Collaboration Research with ITAFoS of Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)
The research team from the Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University has established a research collaboration with the UPM Institute of Tropical Agriculture and Food Security (ITAFoS). This research collaboration is an implementation of the FPK Unhas research scheme for the 2024 budget year, and also with financial assistance from the Enhancing Quality Education for International University Recognition (EQUITY) Unhas program through Rector’s Decree No. 02339/UN4.1.2/KEP/2024, concerning Joint Research between Hasanuddin University Faculty of Animal Science with Universiti Putra Malaysia. The activity began with a visit from researchers from the Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University, represented by Prof. Dr. Ir. Jasmal A. Syamsu, M.Si, IPU, ASEAN Eng., Dr. Ir. Sri Purwanti, S.Pt., M.Si., IPM, ASEAN Eng., and Abd. Alim Yamin, S.Pt., M.Si., to UPM on March 8 2024. The representative from UPM ITAFoS is Prof. Dr. Anjas Asmara. The meeting discussed the agenda for research collaboration which will be implemented in 2024. During the visit, the Cooperation Implementation Plan (Implementation Arrangement/IA) document was also signed between the Laboratory of Feed Technology and Industry as a representation of the Animal Science Faculty and the UPM ITAFoS. One form of collaborative activity is conducting laboratory testing and analysis at UPM. This activity is expected to contribute to achieving the Faculty of Animal Husbandry’s Main Performance Indicators (IKU) in lecturers carrying out activities outside campus, especially with collaborative research with QS100 overseas campuses.
Faculty of Animal Science of Unhas Socializes Master and Doctoral Program in Animal Science at UNTL Timor Leste
The Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Hasanuddin University (UNHAS) conducted a socialization regarding the new students’ admission for the Master and Doctoral program in Animal Science and Technology at the Nacional University of Timor Lorosae (UNTL) on Thursday, March 7, 2024. This activity took place at the UNTL Rectorate, Dili, Timor Leste. This socialization aims to increase the number of prospective foreign students in the UNHAS Masters and Doctoral Program in Animal Science, as well as increase cooperation in the fields of education, research, and community service between UNHAS and UNTL. The activity began with the reception of the UNHAS group by the Dean and UNTL Animal Science lecturers. Then, it continued with socialization delivered by Prof. Dr. Ratmawati Malaka, head of the Doctoral Study Program of Animal Science, Unhas. This socialization was attended by 12 people consisting of UNTL lecturers and staff. The participants were very enthusiastic about participating in this socialization and asked many questions regarding study programs and collaboration opportunities. This activity is one of UNHAS’ efforts to improve the quality of education and expand international cooperation networks. It is hoped that this collaboration can provide benefits for both universities and improve the quality of education in the field of animal husbandry in Indonesia and Timor Leste.
PT Vale and Animal Science Faculty of Hasanuddin Unversity Initiate the Collaboration on Farmers Empowerment in East Luwu Area
PT Vale Indonesia Tbk (PT Vale) and the Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University initiate the partnership in cattle farmers’ empowerment through the FGD activity at Kawata Village, Wasuponda District, East Luwu Regency (Saturday, February 3rd, 2024). The FGD raised the theme “the Development of Integrated and Sustainable Livestock Program”. The FGD was attended by 20 farmers, the faculty members team, the Community Development Team from PT Vale, official members from the local government, and the Chairman of the PT Hasanuddin Agrivisi Internusa (PT HAI). Dean of the Animal Science Faculty, Dr Syahdar Baba led the activity and reported the success of the development program of Bali Cattle in Barru Regency as a comparative model that could be adopted and applied in East Luwu Regency area using local conditions as consideration. He also said, “This collaboration aims to improve the knowledge and skill of the farmers in managing their cattle business into the integrated and sustainable model”. Meanwhile, the representative of PT Vale, Khairul, stated that the collaboration with the higher education institution is one of the enterprise’s commitments to develop the economic aspect of the community surrounding the operational area.
The Faculty of Animal Science Collaborate with The PT Charoen Phokpand Indonesia to build the 2nd Broiler Closed House Facility
Secretary General of PT Charoen Phokpand, Andi Magdalena Siari, and Senior Vice President, Mr. Cristian Tiono, visited the Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University on January 11, 2024, to discuss the continuation of the construction of the second Closed House for broiler at the Faculty of Animal Science area. During the meeting, the Dean of the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Dr. Syahdar Baba, said that the existence of the first Closed House (CH) which was built with the assistance of PT Charoen Phokpand, plays a very important role in the learning process. Since operating in March 2018, the 1st CH has been used by more than hundreds of students, for field practice, research, and independent internships by the community who come to get knowledge and experience before building their own CH. In 2023, apart from providing academic benefits, this CH also provided revenue from the activity of raising broiler chicken (IDR 1,062 billion) that was deposited directly to the rector’s account and used to support the faculty activities. Providing information during the meeting, the Dean promoted that the 2nd CH has been initiated and for the continuation of the construction process, collaboration with key stakeholders is important. The results of the discussion agreed on the finalization of the 2nd CH construction in collaboration with PT CPI. The construction process is estimated to be completed in March 2024. After that, the Faculty of Animal Science will operate two closed-house facilities for more than 40,000 broiler chickens per period. The impact of this collaboration on learning and research is expected to be greater, which in turn will increase income and support the operationalization of education at the Faculty of Animal Science.
Lecturer from the Faculty of Animal Science Provides Training on the Diversification of Processed Eggs to the Community in Sinjai Regency
Some of the faculty members from the Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University carry out training on the manufacture of processed egg products (Telur Pindang) for the women farmer group “Tani Putta” at the Lamattiriattang Village, Bulu Poddo District, Sinjai Regency (January 7th, 2024). The training was attended by members of the women’s farmer group. The service team members from the university were Dr. Muhammad Hatta S.Pt., M.Si, Dr. Hajrawati, S.Pt., M.Si Endah Murpiningrum, S.Pt., MP dan Ilham Syarif, S.Pt., M.Si. During the training, Telur Pindang was explained as one of the processed eggs in the herb solution for several hours to prolong egg quality during storage and provide the flavor for the egg. The material used during processing included the guava leaves, onion, and salt. All ingredients were immersed in the water and boiled for 30 min. The final result of this product was characterized by a dark brownish color of the eggshell.
The Lecturer from the Animal Production Department Helps the Community in Takalar Regency to Alleviate Nutritional Deficiency and Environmental Issues
A total of 20 lecturers from the Department of Animal Production, Faculty of Animal Science, Hasanuddin University took action in the form of community services to encourage the community, the smallholder farmer in particular, to improve awareness toward the nutritional deficiency and the environment. The particular activity was carried out in the area of a smallholder farmer “Manongkoki II” located in Manongkoki Village, North Polongbangkeng District, Takalar Regency (Saturday 14 October 2023). The material presented during the activity included the management system of raising the local chicken by Dr Wempie Pakiding; the application of eco-enzymes made from household waste in the animal feed by drh. Farida Nur Yuliati; and the demonstration of diversification the chicken meat product by Dr Hajrawati. The PIC of the activity as well as the Head of the Animal Production Department, Prof M Irfan Said, IPM, ASEAN Eng., hopes that through the extension services, the farmer and other community members could understand better and be able to apply the discussion material in their daily lives. He also said that through this collaboration, the academic members from the university could optimize their role in improving the local tropical animal development on a smallholder scale, fulfilling the community members’ nutrition and enhancing the community’s awareness of their surroundings.
